On 17 March, ELDR Member Party Centro Democrático Liberal (CDL, Spain) convened some 200 activists to Madrid to launch their electoral campaign for the local and regional elections on 22 May, where CDL hopes to significantly increase its presence and break the two-party political deadlock in Spanish politics. During the press conference jointly held by CDL Party Leader Sean O'Curneen Cañas and ELDR Party President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP, the CDL leader stated that "only a liberal government which empowers people instead of parties, will carry Spain towards excellence. We want the mark of excellence which is associated with so many thousands of Spaniards around the world to be associated with Spain too." ELDR President Neyts-Uyttebroeck stated that "The construction of a liberal Europe, open and dynamic, needs the full participation of Spanish liberals, and for them to become a real alternative to conservatives and socialists."
